"…a bona fide horticultural celebrity." - Wall Street Journal

Garden designer and author Jinny Blom set up her landscape design practice in 2000 and has since been accumulating an extraordinary range of commissions in the UK, Europe, Africa and the USA.  She is completely self-taught and doesn’t confine her creative output simply to the built landscape- more, she tailors her skills to suit the very varied commissions she receives ensuring each is given a unique and specific response.

Jinny is an accomplished plants woman, having studied plant habitats meticulously over the years. Her family is filled with artists, musicians, scientists and industrialists and their influence has helped to shape her unorthodox path. Her sensitivity to places and people allows her to respond thoughtfully to commissions, which tend to have a uniqueness that challenges a definable style. “Commissioning a landscape is no different to commissioning a work of art or a piece of music- it is a sensitive, erudite process, not a commodity” says Jinny.

Jinny has created over 250 gardens and landscapes, public and private in the last 12 years, many of which have won awards.  In 2002 HRH the Prince of Wales chose Jinny to help co-design his Healing Garden for the RHS Chelsea Flower Show. She went on to design two further Chelsea show gardens for Laurent-Perrier in 2006 and 2007, winning Gold.  She returned in 2013 with Prince Harry’s first excursion into the show, in its Centenary year. The conceptual garden was designed to raise awareness of the landlocked country of Lesotho ravaged by the HIV epidemic. For the third time Jinny was nominated Woman of the Year 2013 for her contribution to society through her work.

Jinny’s recent designs include the atrium garden of the private dining room for Skye Gyngell’s restaurant Spring, at Somerset House, and an installation Freeze/Fall to coincide with 2014 Frieze Art Fair for the Commes des Garcons flagship store Dover Street Market in London’s Mayfair.  As Artist-in-Residence for CW+, Chelsea and Westminster Hospital she designed their first indoor garden, opened on 31st May 2016.

Her first book is ‘The Thoughtful Gardener: An Intelligent Approach to Garden Design’, published by Jacqui Small in March 2017 in UK, Europe, USA and Canada.

Jinny Blom is a board member of the Therapeutic Landscapes Network in the USA, a Brother of the Artworkers Guild and a member of the Garden Media Guild.

The Thoughtful Gardener: An Intelligent Approach to Garden Design
Jinny's genius is to marry a beautiful vision to an extraordinary empathy with the landscape into which that vision will fit, resulting in a pastoral harmony second to none’ – Victoria, Lady Getty

A prolific designer, Jinny Blom embraces a wide variety of styles, from formal walled gardens to contemporary installations. What defines her work is her skill with plants and her ability to create a garden that responds to the history of the site and the wider landscape. In this book, Jinny shares her insight into the creative process she has developed while designing more than 250 gardens around the world.

The gardens Jinny creates are as different as their owners and their locations. Small gardens are very intimate and have to work efficiently in order to be pleasing. An Oxfordshire garden of rooms is constructed from nothing, creating a new garden with an old soul. There are modern takes on traditional forms.

But all these gardens share a commitment to beautiful craftsmanship and considered planting. Structure and detail are important, and receive close attention. The styles vary considerably – logical, calm, beautiful, romantic, naturalistic, formal, sometimes spare – but the principles remain firm. Jinny designs for the long term, with consideration for the environment; these gardens are built to last.

Reflecting Jinny‘s highly individual character, there is plenty of wit and quirkiness alongside the expert knowledge, and it will appeal to the widest audience of garden lovers. Thoughtful and beautiful, yet practical and informative, this book marries artistry with functionality.
